Artists Statement
Peculiar Biologies My work focuses on the creation of peculiar biologies - hybrid and mutant creatures that reflect our complex interconnectedness with other living species. In particular, I am interested in exploring the contradictions in our multifaceted relationship with animals – in domesticity, agriculture, art, research and in medical science. The works in this exhibition depict imaginary hybrid creatures. Each creature is constructed of diverse elements referencing transgenics, the surgical cutting and inserting of parts, the experimental mixing of the animal, plant, and human – a kind of Frankenstein mingling of species.
