Michelle Hanlin: 'I've been to Paradise (Selfish Portraits)', 2007, mixed media (representational work).
I ME MINE involves eighteen Sydney based contemporary artists responding to the traditional theme of self-portraiture. As very few of the exhibiting artists work explicitly with this somewhat archaic theme, the show provides an opportunity to explore unfamiliar (and even ‘difficult’) conceptual terrain. Responses will be as varied as the art practices involved, ranging through object based works, photography, performance documentation, drawing and/or works on paper, along with post-painting and video. The works will tend to deal more directly with the idea or nature of self-portraiture in itself – for instance, its pedagogical role in art school, its relation to the cult of personality and narcissism, the inevitability of autobiography in ones work, etc –than with discrete identity statements, although the latter may also figure in the show. With the exception of a couple of new graduates, the artists making up I ME MINE have established practices and have exhibited extensively and regularly over the last decade. Each artist works across disciplines and will be producing a new work expressly for the exhibition. Participating artists are; Alex Gawronski, Robert Pulie, Vicky Browne, Michelle Hanlin, Jason Markou, Shane Haseman, Mary Teague, Melody Willis, Matthew Hopkins, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Hana Shimada, Anna John, Koji Ryui and a few more to be confirmed. *High resolution images are available if required, please contact the Director Caroline Wales.
