Shaping Perspectives: Group Glass Exhibition of SCA Alumni and Current Post Graduates and Staff

'Shaping Perspectives' is an exhibition that will showcase the current work of Alumni and current Post-graduate students and staff of SCA’s Glass Studio. A provenance spanning 30 years, this exhibition highlights the influential role a dynamic shared studio environment plays in the development of a unique, diverse and critical visual language of working with glass in the realm of contemporary art.

There are many aspects of an artist’s life that influence the creative investigations one explores through their work. It often goes unsaid however the role a shared studio environment plays in influencing the development of a unique visual identity and working practice.

Sydney College of the Arts (SCA), Glass Studio has without question fostered and played host to many artists’ creative development for both student and teacher alike. The Glass Studio at SCA was established in 1978 by Maureen Cahill as part of the Visual Arts programme of Sydney University’s Visual Arts faculty. Being one of the longest standing glass programmes in this country, SCA has been instrumental in the professional development of some of Australia’s most successful contemporary artists working with glass today. As a result SCA since it’s inception, has played a pivotal role on the changing face of contemporary glass in Australia.

Cahill’s work and teaching practice, firmly based in technical development being based on conceptual ideas, has proven to be the secret ingredient of success for many of SCA’s graduates. The founding influence of Cahill and her methodologies is still present in the ethos of the Glass Studio today. What sets SCA apart from the proverbial academic pack, is that this influence is not outwardly visible through aesthetic or conceptual similarity of graduate work, but on the contrary, the diversity.
