'Palimpsest'
When ancient manuscripts were reused many times over, the layers of inscription - transparent and translucent, clustered and concealed - created a palimpsest, a reconstructed record of time. Palimpsest theory refers to history, but becomes a current entity in which the connection between the layers is not sequential but juxtapositional in space. My formations refer to the notion of the city as a palimpsest of urban existence. Our place in the built environment, our sense of connection, has been transformed by the global data network, which has altered our physical relationship with it but also created an intense new kind of connectivity. The world is now in our living rooms. In these multi-layered reconstructions, past and present are collapsed together to express the complex, multi-directional processes of connection and separation, disintegration and renewal. The work suggests the fragility of this changing urban space, where the bones of the city are progressively deconstructing, leaving traces, like the skeletons of prior incarnations.
